Top-ranked Sabalenka Claims Back-to-Back WTA Player of the Year Accolades.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been voted the Women's Tennis Association player of the year for a second consecutive year.
The twenty-seven-year-old secured four titles – the most on tour – which included retaining the US Open in September versus Amanda Anisimova to claim her fourth career Grand Slam singles title.
A Year of High Performance
Across the season, Sabalenka competed in a circuit-leading nine championship matches, with defeats coming against Madison Keys in the Australian Open final at the start of the year and Coco Gauff in the French Open final.
The star player also triumphed at the Brisbane International early in the season, the Miami Open during the spring, and the Madrid Open as the clay season progressed. She remained the entire year as the top-ranked player, finishing 2025 on top of the rankings for a second straight year.
In July, she achieved the status of being the first athlete to exceed 12,000 WTA ranking points after Serena Williams in 2015.
Record-Breaking Numbers
Sabalenka concluded the season with a sixty-three to twelve win-loss record, and collected a record eleven million pounds in earnings.
She earned almost 80% of the votes cast by global tennis journalists.
Later this month, she is set to play 2022 Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios in a high-profile mixed-gender exhibition match in a bid to "raise women's tennis to a greater prominence".
Other WTA Award Honorees
- Returning Star of the Year: Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, twenty-eight, was voted after taking a 13-month break after the arrival of her first child and making her comeback to the sport at the start of this year.
- Newcomer of the Year: Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko picked up the award after starting the season ranked outside the world's top 300 and rising to the eighteenth spot.
- Doubles Team of the Year: Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend were selected after capturing their second career Grand Slam title as a pair.
- Most Improved Player of the Year: Amanda Anisimova was named after advancing to five finals.
Last week, Carlos Alcaraz won three awards in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Awards, including the year-end number one award, while Jannik Sinner was chosen as fans' favourite for a third time.
