A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as police and firefighters entered the residence close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who fled after the blast was located soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area showed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the property was under an court order due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
