Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of play.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Decider

That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
